HBO has officially greenlit a sweeping new biographical film titled “Blood in the Sox,” and confirmed that actor Josh Hartnett — a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan — will step into the role of one of the most iconic figures in baseball history: Ted Williams.

The casting marks a bold and emotional commitment to telling one of the most complex and revered stories in MLB history. Known as The Splendid Splinter, Teddy Ballgame, and the last man to hit over .400 in a season, Ted Williams’s name is etched into both sports legend and the soul of Boston itself.

“This is personal,” Hartnett said in a statement. “I grew up idolizing Williams not just for how he played, but for who he was when the game stopped. This is more than a baseball story. It’s a story about sacrifice, obsession, and what it means to chase perfection.”

Directed by Ben Affleck, another Boston native and Red Sox devotee, Blood in the Sox will chart Williams’s meteoric rise from a skinny kid in San Diego to arguably the greatest hitter in baseball history — all while navigating the raw pressures of fame, war, and personal demons.

The film promises to explore the many layers of Ted Williams:

  • His obsessive commitment to hitting — “science, art, and madness rolled into one swing.”

  • His volatile relationship with the press and fans — especially in an era where players weren’t always protected.

  • His two wartime military stints, flying fighter planes in WWII and Korea — sacrificing peak years of his career for service.

  • His complicated yet enduring relationship with Boston, a city that could both revere and rage at its heroes.

Executive producer Theo Epstein, former Red Sox GM and architect of their 2004 World Series win, said:

“Ted Williams was Boston’s myth before Boston believed in miracles. His story isn’t easy, and that’s exactly why it matters.”

The title “Blood in the Sox” speaks to the grit behind the greatness — a nod to the sacrifices, the friction, and the raw humanity that defined both Williams and the franchise he helped build.

Ted Williams' little-known Hispanic heritage

The film will also highlight Williams’s deep later-life advocacy for youth baseball, his complicated relationships off the field, and the lonely dignity of a man who often seemed larger than life, yet never quite at home in it.

Slated for release on HBO and Max in 2026, the project is already being described by insiders as HBO’s answer to “The Last Dance” and “42” — but with a uniquely New England heart and fire.

Ted Williams didn’t just wear the Red Sox jersey — he bled for it.
And now, his story will be told the way he lived it:
Brilliant, brutal, and unforgettable.
