GREEN BAY, Wis. – Not every rookie makes noise on Day One. But Matthew Golden did.
During the opening practice of Packers training camp — where dozens of rookies were battling to stand out — Golden made an instant impact by hauling in a touchdown reception, connecting with quarterback Malik Willis in a surprise highlight moment.
It wasn’t just a play — it was a statement. Golden didn’t come to Green Bay to wait his turn. He came to compete — and claim his place.

A Promising First Step
Golden, selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, entered camp carrying major expectations — he’s the first wide receiver taken by Green Bay in the first round since 2002. With the team looking to revive a struggling passing game from last season, Golden’s presence brings hope — and immediate energy.
“It feels amazing just to get back to normal and play ball with the guys,” Golden said after practice.
“I love football, and being out here is a blessing.”
Talent, Mindset, and the Moment
Head coach Matt LaFleur isn’t one to offer premature praise — but even he couldn’t hide his optimism:
“He’s not afraid of hard work. He really cares about the game and is going to put in the time and effort,” LaFleur said.
“Now the fun begins. It’ll be exciting to see him compete in pads, joint practices, and preseason games. It’s a competitive room, and these guys are going to have to fight for every opportunity.” GM Brian Gutekunst: “We Drafted Him for a Reason”
Gutekunst is no stranger to high-stakes draft picks — and he knows the danger of putting too much on a rookie too soon. But with Golden, there’s confidence.
“He’s pretty resilient,” Gutekunst said. “He played at a smaller program in Texas, but made the playoffs. That experience should help. We’ve got a solid support system here, and I believe he’ll adjust to life in Green Bay and the spotlight that comes with this organization.”
Can Golden Break the Mold?
Unlike other recent first-round picks — Jordan Love, Devonte Wyatt, Lukas Van Ness — who started as backups, Golden may be on a faster track.
“You never know what opportunities will come a rookie’s way,” Gutekunst said.
“But we believe he has a real chance to make an impact. That’s why we took him.”
With NFL history filled with rookie wideouts making waves — from Justin Jefferson to Brian Thomas Jr. — Green Bay hopes Golden is the next big breakout.
