In a stunning and heartwarming act of generosity, Los Angeles Dodgers superstars Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman have joined forces to launch a $10.3 million animal rescue and rehabilitation center — a haven for abandoned, injured, and lost pets across Southern California.
The state-of-the-art facility, called “Home Base Haven”, will provide round-the-clock medical care, emotional rehabilitation, and adoption services for animals that have been neglected, displaced, or forgotten.
And the reason behind it? It all began with two dogs — one lost, one rescued — and two MLB stars who refused to look the other way.
From Teammates to Guardians of the Voiceless
It started quietly. Ohtani, a known animal lover, rescued a stray dog that had wandered near Dodger Stadium earlier this year. Just days later, Freeman revealed that his family had adopted a dog found injured near a freeway overpass.
What began as individual acts of kindness sparked a larger conversation between the two MVP-caliber players:
“If we can give a second chance to a few pets, why not thousands?” — Freddie Freeman
“These animals deserve love, safety, and a real home,” added Shohei Ohtani.
That conversation grew into an ambitious dream — and now, a real-life project.

Inside “Home Base Haven”: A Shelter Like No Other
Set to open in early 2026 in the outskirts of Los Angeles, the 25,000-square-foot sanctuary will feature:
-
Emergency vet clinics and trauma recovery units
-
On-site behavioral specialists and trainers
-
Foster programs and full-service adoption support
-
Outdoor play zones and healing gardens
-
Special wing for senior and disabled animals
-
A “Heroes’ Wall” to honor animals who saved lives or overcame extraordinary odds
But beyond the facilities, Ohtani and Freeman insisted the shelter embody compassion, dignity, and hope.

A Mission Fueled by Love — And Action
Ohtani and Freeman are personally funding $10.3 million into the project, turning down endorsements and choosing instead to invest in something close to their hearts.
“This is bigger than baseball,” Freeman said during a quiet press meeting.
“These animals have no voice — so we’ll be theirs,” Ohtani added.
Fans and fellow athletes across leagues have already begun donating and spreading the word, calling it the “most meaningful offseason play” in years.
Internet in Tears: “This Is Why We Love These Guys”
As the news broke, social media exploded with praise:
“Forget home runs — these guys just hit a grand slam for animals.”
“Ohtani and Freeman are heroes in every sense.”
“Someone’s cutting onions again… what a beautiful story.”
Animal rights organizations, shelters, and even local governments have expressed their support and hope that “Home Base Haven” becomes a model for similar shelters nationwide.
A Legacy Beyond the Field
In a sports world often obsessed with stats and contracts, Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman just reminded us what true legacy looks like — compassion, courage, and community.
And for the thousands of four-legged souls who will soon walk through the doors of their shelter, it’s a second chance at life — built on love.
