DETROIT – Is there trouble brewing between veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone and the Detroit Lions?
Heading into the final year of his three-year extension signed in 2023, Anzalone made headlines this week when he expressed disappointment with his current contract — claiming it doesn’t reflect his performance, leadership value, or the current linebacker market.
Now 30, the former New Orleans Saints linebacker told reporters he believes he’s underpaid, and that any questions should be directed to head coach Dan Campbell. In response, Campbell made it clear that while no new deal is finalized, there’s no animosity from the team toward one of its most trusted defensive leaders.
“We’ve leaned on Alex. He’s been reliable, tough and consistent,” Campbell said. “There’s no bad blood at all.”
A Leadership Shift: Jack Campbell Steps In
While contract talks remain unresolved, second-year linebacker Jack Campbell is stepping into a larger leadership role within Detroit’s defense under new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard.
“It’s an honor,” Campbell said after Friday’s practice. “But I’m not going to change who I am. This defense works because we all move as one – players, coaches, everyone. It takes all 11 guys on the field.”
The former first-round pick in 2023 is coming off a productive rookie campaign, finishing with:
-
131 tackles
-
5 quarterback hits
-
5 pass deflections
-
1 forced fumble.
No Fire, Just Friction? Why Fans Shouldn’t Panic (Yet)
While Anzalone’s comments may stir concern among fans, league insiders say this situation is more about value than conflict. With the NFL linebacker market heating up this offseason, it’s no surprise Anzalone wants to be part of the financial conversation.
But for now, the Lions remain focused on building chemistry and continuity on defense—with or without a resolution to Anzalone’s contract before the season starts.
