NFL training camp is officially underway, and once again, two of the most talked-about teams are the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs—both perennial Super Bowl contenders led by star quarterbacks Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
While Mahomes has already won three Super Bowls and appeared in five, Allen is still searching for his first appearance on the league’s biggest stage. A major hurdle in his path? The Bills’ continued struggles to get past the Chiefs in the postseason, despite Allen delivering some unforgettable performances in their previous matchups.
Ahead of the 2025 season, Allen had an exclusive interview with “Esports Insider,” where he opened up about the playoff frustrations and his respect for Mahomes.
“You’ve got to make sure that you’re doing everything right on your side of the football and not giving him short fields and turnovers,” Allen said, reflecting on their playoff battles. “Getting over that hump—it’s been the question. I hear it all the time. I’m getting a little tired of it. But the way to stop getting that question asked is to go out there and do it.”
Despite the rivalry, Allen’s admiration for Mahomes has never wavered. The two have developed a close bond both as competitors and friends since entering the league.
“He’s an extremely talented player,” Allen said of Mahomes. “He’s a heck of an athlete. You see him play some basketball—I’ve seen the videos. I’ve played golf with him myself. He’s a great guy. I think guys love being around him in the locker room. That’s a trait I think most quarterbacks need to have to be successful in this league.”
In regular-season matchups, Josh Allen holds a 4–1 record against Patrick Mahomes. That said, when it matters most in the postseason, Mahomes has had the upper hand—beating Allen and the Bills in all four of their playoff meetings. Those four losses account for two-thirds of Allen’s six career playoff defeats.
The next chapter in their rivalry is set for Nov 2, when the Bills host the Chiefs at Highmark Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET in what’s expected to be one of the marquee games of the 2025 regular season.
