New 49ers Signing Creating a Headache for San Francisco Ahead of Training Camp

The San Francisco 49ers had to bring in reinforcements to the wide receiver room due to the uncertainty facing a few of their playmakers. Deebo Samuel’s inevitable departure and Brandon Aiyuk’s recovery from the knee injury necessitated that the 49ers add more talent to the WR rotation. So, GM John Lynch targeted a veteran pass-catcher from a division rival, signing Demarcus Robinson to a two-year, $8 million contract in free agency.

Robinson brings in veteran competence and extensive postseason experience, having played in the playoffs every single season of his career. As a member of the Los Angeles Rams for the past two seasons, the 49ers were able to get a closer look at what the 30-year-old WR could still do. Just last season, Robinson was able to put up 505 yards and seven touchdowns in 17 starts.

While head coach Kyle Shanahan is excited about Robinson’s fit, praising his physicality, there is one complicating factor that is giving the 49ers a headache before the season.

Looming Suspension for WR Demarcus Robinson Complicates 49ers’ Outlook

Robinson is facing a potential three-game suspension by the league after he was arrested for driving faster than 100mph on the freeway on November 25, 2024, followed by another arrest for a misdemeanor DUI in Los Angeles on January 9, 2025. The Rams had revealed in the offseason that these incidents were a factor in their decision to not retain the veteran receiver.

The Rams or the NFL refused to punish Robinson during the season, but the expectation around the league, as reported by NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, is that a suspension is looming.

A potential suspension would not only delay Robinson’s debut in San Francisco but would also severely weaken the 49ers’ offense to begin the season. The team will have to hope that rookie Jordan Watkins and second-year WR Jacob Cowing can step into large roles from Week 1.
