An Ugly Night That Raised Serious Questions
Detroit Lions fans would rather erase the memory of Thursday, July 31, when their team was thoroughly dominated by the Los Angeles Chargers in a 34-7 loss that exposed some glaring weaknesses. The game wasn’t just bad — it was alarming, and perhaps most concerning of all was the team’s situation at quarterback behind Jared Goff.
While Jared Goff remains the undisputed starter, Thursday’s game reminded fans just how fragile the quarterback room really is. For a team with playoff aspirations, having a reliable QB2 isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. Unfortunately, Detroit seems to be ignoring that fact.

Both Allen and Hooker Failed to Impress
Head coach Dan Campbell gave the preseason start to Kyle Allen, hoping the veteran would solidify himself as the No. 2. Instead, Allen struggled to move the ball and consistently turned it over — and that’s against defenders who likely won’t even make the Chargers’ final roster.
Then came Hendon Hooker, the Lions’ developmental prospect, who didn’t fare any better. According to Nick Halden of Detroit Jock City, “Hooker looked equally lost on the football field,” raising more red flags about his readiness — or lack thereof.
“Making this all the more concerning is the fact that Allen was going against a lot of pieces who will never take the field in the 2025 season,” Halden wrote.
“Still, the quarterback couldn’t move the ball and consistently created turnovers.”
Can the Lions Trust Either QB if Goff Goes Down?
If Jared Goff were to suffer even a minor injury this season, could the Lions trust either Allen or Hooker to win a game? For many analysts, the answer is a resounding no.
“If Jared Goff goes down for any extended time, it isn’t a hot take to believe the season is lost,” Halden added.
“The Lions owe it to themselves and the fan base to learn from this and upgrade from Allen.”
For someone who’s started 19 NFL games, Allen didn’t look like a seasoned backup. And Hooker, though promising on paper, looked unprepared and overwhelmed — not what you want to see from your future No. 2.
Could a Trade or Signing Be on the Horizon?
Many fans are now calling for the front office to act quickly. Brad Holmes and the Lions brass can no longer afford to overlook the QB2 position. Some have even floated names like Cooper Rush, a Michigan native who signed with the Ravens this offseason, as an ideal candidate.
“Every other team in the NFL is taking their QB2 situation seriously,” Halden emphasized.
“It’s time the Lions do the same — and fast.”
If the Lions want to protect their playoff window — and Jared Goff — they’ll need a reliable insurance plan under center.
Final Word
The 34-7 loss was a preseason game, but the warning signs it exposed are real. With Allen struggling and Hooker not yet ready, both quarterbacks may soon find themselves on the chopping block.
And if Detroit doesn’t act now, the next time Goff goes down, the whole season could go down with him
