A Rookie With Veteran Poise: Golden Impresses Early in Camp
The Green Bay Packers are only two weeks into training camp, but first-round rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden is already turning heads — and not just among fans, but at the very top of the organization.

Despite facing fierce internal competition in a talented receiver room that includes Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks, Golden has started to carve out a role with the first-team offense, appearing regularly in formations, even when only two receivers are on the field.
“It’s early, but he’s been a great pro,” Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said on the Family Night broadcast.
“His hands have stood out as well.”
Why Matthew Golden Is Earning Trust Quickly
Golden came into the draft known for his exceptional hands, and so far, that skillset has transitioned seamlessly to the NFL level. While the pace of pro football often overwhelms rookies, Golden has shown a maturity beyond his years, both in his route running and his mental grasp of the offense.
“It’s starting to slow down for me,” Golden said in a recent interview with Packers.com.
“Now I can go out there and just play and have fun, not think so much. It’s about getting open, knowing my alignment and assignment.”
This early adjustment has helped Golden integrate into the offense faster than most rookies. Coaches have been impressed by his ability to line up both inside and outside, particularly in 12 personnel — a package where other receivers like Reed typically rotate out. Golden, however, has managed to stay on the field.
The Packers’ Investment and What It Means
The Packers have been aggressively developing their receiving corps in recent drafts, but selecting Golden in the first round was a clear signal that the organization expects immediate contribution, not just long-term potential.
So far, Golden has met — if not exceeded — those expectations.
While the team will still rotate heavily at receiver during the preseason, Golden’s consistency and polish could make him a Week 1 starter, or at the very least, a core part of the offensive snap count early in the season.
A Natural Fit in the Packers Offense
Golden’s strengths match perfectly with Jordan Love’s evolving passing game. His reliable hands, crisp releases, and football IQ are already being utilized in situational packages, and he’s showing chemistry with the quarterback that could accelerate his rise.
In a league where rookie receivers often take time to develop, Golden’s trajectory appears to be ahead of schedule.
What’s Next for Golden?
As training camp continues and the preseason games begin, all eyes will be on Matthew Golden to see if he can continue his upward momentum. But with praise from the GM, solid performances in camp, and early work with the first-team offense, the foundation is firmly in place.
