Earlier this week in downtown Houston, Texans wide receiver Tank Dell was leaving a team charity event when he crossed paths with a man pushing a battered garbage cart. The man — wearing a torn shirt and sun-faded hat — was quietly cleaning the alleyway behind a restaurant.
According to eyewitnesses, Dell stopped to greet him. When the man asked quietly, “Got a dollar for a sandwich?”, what happened next would move thousands to tears.
Tank Dell Didn’t Just Give — He Stayed
Instead of reaching for his wallet and walking off, Dell paused. He asked the man his name, his story — and truly listened.
“They talked like old friends. No rush, no bodyguards moving him along. Just Tank and this man having a real moment,” said one onlooker who later shared the story on X (formerly Twitter).
Dell then invited the man to join him at a nearby food truck. They sat down, shared a meal, and continued talking for nearly 30 minutes.

A Life-Changing Act of Generosity
After hearing that the man had once worked as a custodian but lost his job and housing during the pandemic, Dell quietly took action:
- He paid for one month of temporary housing
- He arranged a job interview with a local waste management contractor the next morning
- And he left behind a note: “You matter. Keep going. I believe in you.”
Within 48 hours, the man was off the street — with food, shelter, and hope.
“He didn’t do it for the cameras. He did it because it was the right thing,” said a volunteer from a local outreach group Tank Dell frequently donates to.
