The Minnesota Vikings are putting a lot of faith in second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy heading into the 2025 NFL season.

After being forced to miss his entire rookie year due to a knee injury, McCarthy is set to be the team’s starter this season. Sam Darnold left town in free agency and the Vikings opted to pass on veteran options to move forward with the former Michigan standout.

McCarthy is loaded with talent and potential. While the talent and potential are there, putting up good numbers on the field is a whole different game.

Throughout the early portion of training camp and preseason action, McCarthy has had great moments and he has had bad moments. Every young quarterback goes through ups and downs.

With that being said, Minnesota was a 14-3 football team last year. The expectation is that the Vikings should be competitive once again this season.

Keeping that in mind, head coach Kevin O’Connell spoke out with a very cryptic update regarding McCarthy.

“J.J. is in a good spot right now,” O’Connell said. “We just got to keep working. It’s details, it’s discipline. It’s a lot of boring things.”

He had more to say about the young signal caller as well.

“He’s in a really good spot right now from the standpoint we’re trying to build a plan that goes beyond the first regular season game,” O’Connell said. “We want to get him ready to go. We want to get him prepared. My job is to prepare the whole football team, and those two things can be going on at the same time, but maybe not necessarily be in the same place at the same time.”

Needless to say, McCarthy is facing a lot of pressure. He was the team’s first-round pick a year ago, but he missed out on a lot of important reps due to his injury.

Thankfully, Minnesota does have a great situation for McCarthy. He has a stacked offense around him featuring Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Aaron Jones, and T.J. Hockenson. Those weapons are as much as a young quarterback could ask to have.

Will that translate to success on the field? That remains to be seen, but McCarthy has a fighting chance to play well this year.

Hopefully, the Vikings will be proven right for their belief in McCarthy. It’s a big risk with a team that’s built to win now, but they’re clearly confident in his ability.
