It’s not just another season in Minnesota. It’s a new era.
Gone are the days of transition. Gone are the doubts about leadership. In 2025, the Minnesota Vikings have found their quarterback of the future—and he’s here now.
J.J. McCarthy isn’t just showing up to training camp. He’s commanding it.
Following an offseason built around strategic growth, deep mentorship, and relentless preparation, the former Michigan star has arrived with purpose. Not flash. Not noise. Just readiness.
“I’ve studied. I’ve trained. Now I’m here to lead,” McCarthy said at the opening of Vikings camp. “I didn’t come to learn slowly. I came to compete.”
And while McCarthy’s debut as the face of the franchise is generating buzz across the NFL, there’s another story unfolding quietly in Eagan: three veteran Vikings over the age of 30—each with their own battle scars—are making it crystal clear:
We’re not done yet.
McCarthy’s Maturity: From Prospect to Pro
It’s hard to overstate the level of preparation McCarthy poured into the last four months.
After being selected in the first round, he didn’t celebrate—he started studying. First, he locked in a mentorship program with Kirk Cousins before his departure to Atlanta. Then came the private work with offensive coordinator Wes Phillips—building the playbook brick by brick.
Sources say McCarthy went full Peyton Manning mode: hours at the facility, running simulated 2-minute drills, breaking down pre-snap reads, even reviewing film of past NFC North defenses dating back five years.
“He’s not acting like a rookie,” said WR Justin Jefferson. “He’s acting like a franchise guy.”
But McCarthy also knows he’s walking into a locker room filled with veterans, leaders who have carried the purple and gold through glory and grit. And that’s exactly why he’s deferring to them—not for authority, but for accountability.
“You don’t come in here barking orders,” McCarthy said. “You come in here earning trust. That’s how real leadership works.”

Old School Toughness: The Vikings’ Veteran Core
While McCarthy represents the future, Minnesota’s veteran trio—each over 30—represents the backbone. The soul. The grit.
And they’re not here for nostalgia. They’re here to win.
1. Harrison Smith (35) – The Last Viking Standing
He’s the last bridge to the Zimmer era. The last link to the Minneapolis Miracle. But don’t call him a relic—call him a force.
Smith is entering his 13th NFL season, but he’s moving like he’s 28. After tweaking his offseason training to include martial arts and reaction-based vision training, the safety’s range is back—and his instincts remain elite.
“Harry reads quarterbacks like poker players read tells,” said DC Brian Flores. “He’s still one of the smartest defenders in the league.”
But Smith’s impact goes beyond stats. He’s taken McCarthy under his wing during practice, teaching him how to disguise coverage—and how to beat it.
“He’s the kind of guy that makes you better just by being in the huddle,” McCarthy said. “He’s a walking masterclass.”
2. Brian O’Neill (30) – The Quiet Protector
McCarthy’s blind side is in good hands.
After a rollercoaster 2024 marked by injuries, O’Neill rehabbed with vengeance. Now back at full strength, the right tackle is anchoring the line with precision and purpose.
“He came into camp with something to prove,” said OL coach Chris Kuper. “And he’s showing it every rep.”
O’Neill’s relationship with McCarthy is also one of early chemistry. The two reportedly trained together in Southern California for a week before camp—establishing trust and timing off the field that’s translating onto it.
“He told me, ‘I got you,’” McCarthy said. “And I believe him.”
3. Jordan Hicks (32) – The Commander of the Core
Hicks doesn’t talk much. But when he moves, everyone listens.
Returning after a quietly effective 2024, the veteran linebacker is running camp like a general. His film IQ is second to none, and younger defenders have gravitated toward his calm, decisive demeanor.
“Jordan is our GPS,” said safety Cam Bynum. “When things break down, he brings it back.”
And Hicks isn’t taking a back seat to the youth movement. He’s winning 1-on-1 drills, diagnosing plays pre-snap, and setting a tone of accountability that the entire defensive unit is rallying around.
“He’s the heartbeat of the defense,” said head coach Kevin O’Connell.
A Team Recalibrated
For years, the Vikings have hovered on the edge—flashes of brilliance followed by heartbreak. But something feels different now. There’s a balance. Youth and wisdom. Fire and structure.
McCarthy and the veterans aren’t competing for control. They’re complementing each other.
“You’ve got a kid with vision and veterans with muscle memory,” said WR K.J. Osborn. “That’s how you build something real.”
Eyes on September
The path ahead isn’t easy. The NFC North is stacked. Expectations are high. And every rookie quarterback faces growing pains.
But inside TCO Performance Center, there’s no panic—just preparation.
McCarthy is already showing command in 7-on-7s. Smith is setting the tempo on defense. Hicks is anchoring the linebacker corps. O’Neill is holding the wall.
And behind all of it, there’s belief.
“We’ve got young stars and old warriors,” McCarthy said with a smile. “What more could you ask for?”
What more, indeed.
