Houston, TX – June 24, 2025 — In an extraordinary act of compassion and leadership, Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon has announced the donation of his entire $12.9 million in 2025 prize money and sponsorship earnings to the Homeless Shelter Initiative, a national nonprofit focused on creating long-term solutions to the homelessness crisis.

Mixon’s contribution will directly fund the construction of 150 transitional housing units and provide 300 emergency shelter beds in key cities, with the first projects launching in Houston, where homelessness remains one of the city’s most urgent social challenges.

“No One Deserves to Sleep on the Sidewalk”

Speaking at a press conference held at NRG Stadium, Mixon opened up about his personal connection to the cause:

“I saw firsthand the effects of homelessness as a child, and I knew if I had the means, I would give back in a meaningful way,” Mixon said. “No one deserves to sleep on the sidewalk.”

His voice broke as he reflected on childhood memories of seeing families struggle for a safe place to sleep — a reality that has stayed with him throughout his journey to the NFL.

Transformational Impact for At-Risk Communities

The $12.9 million donation is the largest charitable gift of the year by an NFL player. The Homeless Shelter Initiative confirmed the funds will be used to:

  • Construct 150 transitional housing units across five major U.S. cities

  • Provide 300 shelter beds for those in immediate need

  • Support wraparound services such as mental health counseling, job training, and food assistance

  • Launch a community outreach campaign specifically targeting underserved neighborhoods in Houston, Dallas, New Orleans, Atlanta, and Memphis

Executive Director Maria Langford called Mixon’s donation “a legacy-level moment.”

“Joe’s heart and commitment will not only give people shelter — it will give them a second chance at life. This is more than generosity; it’s leadership.”

The Houston Texans issued a formal statement praising Mixon’s decision:

“Joe Mixon has proven time and again that he’s more than an athlete — he’s a difference-maker in our city and beyond,” said Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans. “We are proud to support him and this incredible mission.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell also commended the move:

“Joe Mixon’s contribution sets a powerful example for players across the league. His compassion will have a lasting impact far beyond the game.”

Teammates, including quarterback CJ Stroud, took to social media with the hashtag #MixonForChange, writing:

Fans Inspired by #MixonForChange

As the news spread, fans across the league rallied behind Mixon’s gesture. The hashtag #MixonForChange trended on social media, with supporters praising the running back’s humility and action.

One fan posted: “Joe Mixon just scored the most important touchdown of his career — for humanity.”

Another added: “I’m proud to be a Texans fan today. This is the kind of leadership that changes lives.”

First Project Begins in Houston This Fall

The first project funded by Mixon’s donation will begin construction this fall in Houston’s Third Ward, one of the city’s hardest-hit areas. The facility will offer family housing, job placement programs, healthcare access, and substance abuse recovery services — all under one roof.

Additional shelters are scheduled for development in early 2026 in Dallas and Atlanta, cities where affordable housing shortages have fueled rising homelessness.

A Legacy Bigger Than Football

While Joe Mixon remains a key part of the Texans’ offense, his donation marks a moment that transcends sports. Known for his determination on the field, this latest move highlights his commitment to purpose off of it.

“Football is what I do, but this is who I am,” Mixon said. “If I can help even one person find shelter and hope, then every yard I’ve gained means something more.”
