For most NFL players, the offseason is a time to rest, recover, maybe travel. But for Nick Bosa, it was a time of revelation—one sparked not by football, but by a chance encounter with a wounded sea turtle off the coast of Monterey Bay.
And it changed everything.
In a stunning move that’s drawn praise from scientists, celebrities, and environmentalists, Bosa has pledged over $10 million of his personal earnings to sea turtle conservation efforts along California’s coastline. But it’s not just a financial donation—Bosa is getting his hands dirty. Literally.
Over the past several months, the 49ers star has been spotted at various marine rescue centers, including the Pacific Marine Life Institute and the Sea Turtle Recovery Foundation. Witnesses say he’s been volunteering during the early morning hours, helping clean tanks, feed rehabilitating turtles, and even escorting recovered animals back to the ocean.
“People think it’s a PR stunt,” said one marine biologist. “It’s not. He’s been here before sunrise, asking questions, learning the biology, lifting water buckets like it’s game day.”
The roots of Bosa’s passion began during a solo vacation this spring, when he encountered a juvenile green sea turtle tangled in plastic debris. After alerting a local rescue team, he stayed with the animal for over an hour, shielding it from predators until help arrived.
“That moment shook me,” Bosa later told a documentary crew. “I’d never felt that kind of helplessness. I realized we’re part of something much bigger.”
Following the incident, Bosa began researching ocean health, learning that sea turtles are keystone species—creatures whose presence shapes entire ecosystems. Without them, jellyfish populations explode, sea grass beds die, and coral reefs collapse. Or, as Bosa now puts it, “Without sea turtles, the ocean would be silent.”
His foundation—The Silent Shore Initiative—is already funding multiple programs, including beach cleanups, hatchling protection programs, and marine research grants. It’s also launching a children’s education campaign with animated shorts narrated by Bosa himself.

49ers teammates have been both surprised and inspired.
“I never thought I’d see Nick cradling a turtle like a baby,” joked Deebo Samuel. “But it’s legit. He’s all in.”
Coach Shanahan confirmed that the team fully supports Bosa’s mission, even adjusting summer training schedules so the player could attend key conservation events. “You want your players to care about something bigger than football. Nick found that.”
Even NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has weighed in, calling it “one of the most impactful off-field moves we’ve seen in years.”
But for Bosa, the motivation is deeply personal. “Football gave me a platform,” he said. “Now I’m using it. Because if we don’t act now, the next generation won’t even know what we lost.”
And as for the turtle he rescued? It made a full recovery and was released back into the ocean—nicknamed “Bo” by the rescue team.
